Happened to read the works(The Kite Runner $ A thousand splendid suns) by Khaled Hosseini.About a country- Afganistan and its people whose lives and dreams were lost under the Taliban rule. This country, as I know from the media is fully shattered, broken children, with dogs and widows wandering about on the streets, with very less men, no jobs, no freedom , destroyed by all means.
But his books throw light into a time in Afganistan when the people could hold high their 'Nang and Namoos'- pride and prestige, when they were proud of their 'Watan'- country and its rich culture $ heritage, when the women taught in Universities, when the children flew kites in the sky until a day came on which they realised that they had lost 'their way of life'. As said by the narrator "our old life is gone Sohrab.Everyone in it is either dead or dying".
But inspite of all these, there were lives there who still believed in love, care, brotherhood and still hoped their country would one day return to their lost glory- Mariam who stood for her husband's second wife and kids and had put her maximum effort to help them escape from the Taliban but sacrificed her life for that; Amir who stood for the son of his illegitimate brother Hassan and took all hardships to retrieve him from Afganistan; Hassan who lost his life for Amir's family.....
Good to see such books that stands for a cause..Reading more about the author,I came to know that he provides humanitarian assistance to the people there through The Khaled Hosseini Foundation. In 2006 he was named a goodwill envoy to UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency. It was a different experience to know more about him from his website and his efforts to rejuvenate the country back to glory. Let the new generation read such books that help them to understand the relevance of humanity towards fellow beings and to have an awareness about the usage of power and politics to satisfy selfish motives .
